Wildsc’ool is about learning outside the schoolroom, where
‘wild’ is the school and is also ‘cool’.
Nature is a teacher, and learning goes hand in hand with enjoyment.
Our Wildsc’ool project provides the children with
opportunities to improve their skills in mathematics, technology, environmental
science, research, cataloguing and writing. It includes field excursions
followed by practical sessions at the school. The variety of activities ensures
that there will be something to interest every child and to develop new
skills.
This year the children collected seeds from local native species,
used a GPS to help design a bushwalk, designed, made and erected signs to
assist visitor enjoyment, researched
Aboriginal uses of plant and animals found in the reserve and helped with the
monitoring of native animals.
At the end of the school year each group prepared an
entertaining short video on their activities during the year. These were presented at the ‘hand over’
event, where this year’s students passed on the baton to the children who will
take part in the program in 2013.
This program was only possible because of the interest and
dedication of the class teacher, several volunteers from the Friends of
Coningham NRA and Jen Mudge our PWS ranger and her crew of PWS staff.
Wildsc'ool is an initiative of Wildcare Inc who supplied a seeding grant to get the program established and has also supported the program with further grants and on ground assistance.
